Could I have brought cockroaches home from work or a visit?
It is possible, but one cockroach caught early rarely starts an infestation on its own. Check your bags, boxes and luggage, then let a few weeks of monitor traps give you the answer.
It is possible. Cockroaches do ride in bags, boxes, deliveries and luggage. But one cockroach caught early rarely starts an infestation on its own. The exception is a female carrying an egg case, and that is why you watch for a few weeks rather than guess. You do not need to spiral tonight. You need a short check and a simple plan.
How cockroaches hitch a ride
They like dark, tight spaces. A bag left on a kitchen floor, a cardboard box from a warehouse, a suitcase that sat in a hotel room, a stack of leaflets. They ride in things far more often than on the clothes you are wearing. And most visits to a home that has cockroaches end without one coming back with you.
Check these today
- Bags. Empty the bag in the bath or over a light-coloured surface. Shake it out, check the seams and pockets with a torch, and hoover it. Wash fabric bags as their label allows.
- Luggage. Unpack on a hard floor away from the bedroom, or in the bath. Hoover the seams, zips and wheel housings. Store the case away from where you sleep and eat.
- Boxes and deliveries. Unpack soon, flatten the cardboard and put it in an outside bin.
- Paperwork and leaflets. Flick through anything left behind, then recycle what you do not need.
Is it even a cockroach?
Plenty of small bugs look like a young cockroach at first glance, especially when you are already worried. Get a clear photo with something for scale and compare it with our four cockroaches side by side. Some species live outdoors and wander in now and then without ever settling. The one that breeds indoors is the small, tan German cockroach. Our page on telling a German cockroach from the rest covers the lookalikes.
A calm plan for the next few weeks
- Put out monitor traps. Under the kitchen sink, behind the fridge, in the bathroom, and wherever your bags and cases usually land. Set them flat against the wall. See how to use monitor traps.
- Check them on the same day each week and write down what each one caught. Count adults and young ones separately.
- Look for signs once a week. Droppings like ground pepper and small brown egg cases along hinges and behind appliances. Our page on droppings and egg cases shows them.
- Keep it up for four weeks. Then decide.
Empty traps and no droppings after four weeks is a good sign that it was a lone traveller. Young ones on a trap mean breeding nearby, and it is time for the plan in our page on finding baby cockroaches.
Kids and pets: monitor traps have no poison, but the glue sticks to fingers and fur. Put them behind appliances and inside cupboards a toddler cannot open.
If you keep going back
Maybe your job takes you into homes or buildings with cockroaches, or a friend you visit has them. A few habits lower the risk without making it awkward. Keep your bag closed and off the floor, on a chair or a hook. Take in only what you need. Check the bag when you get home. If you work in other people’s homes, keep a trap where you drop your work things.
And if you just got back from a trip, our page for travellers covers luggage habits that help with bed bugs too.
Skip the panic buying
Spraying the whole flat or setting off a fogger just in case does not help. It cannot reach a cockroach you have not seen, and it can push any that are there deeper into the walls. Traps first. They are cheap, they tell you the truth, and they let you sleep.
More questions
Should I wash everything I wore?
Wash as normal if it helps you feel better. Cockroaches ride in bags and boxes far more than on clothes you are wearing.
I found one dead in my suitcase. Does that change anything?
It tells you one travelled. Check the rest of the case and put traps down as above.
Can one cockroach start an infestation?
A female carrying an egg case can. That is why young ones on a trap matter more than any single adult.
Should I tell my friend?
They most likely know already. Keeping your bag off the floor is enough, no conversation needed.
