Marks on my sheets but no bites. Could it be bed bugs?
It could be, because not everyone reacts to bed bug bites. But marks on sheets have plenty of ordinary causes too. Check the bed once, properly, then let interceptors watch for you.
It could be, and it could be nothing at all. Not everyone reacts to bed bug bites, so no bites does not rule them out. But marks on sheets have plenty of ordinary causes too. You do not have to search the bed every night. One careful check, then a few weeks with interceptors, will give you a real answer.
Bed bugs travel in luggage and second-hand furniture, so they turn up in tidy homes and good hotels alike. Checking is simply the sensible next step.
What bed bug signs look like
- Dark spots like felt-tip dots, often in small clusters along seams. They soak into fabric rather than sitting on top, and they smear if you wipe them with a damp cloth.
- Small rusty smears on the sheet, where a bug was crushed after feeding.
- Shed skins: pale, empty shells shaped like the bug.
- Eggs: tiny, white, often stuck in seams and corners.
- The bugs: flat, oval and reddish brown, about the size of an apple seed when adult.
Our bed bug guide has a drawing and the signs to check, and our page on droppings and egg cases shows how bed bug spots differ from other insect droppings.
What else leaves marks
Brown or dark marks on bedding are common, and most have dull explanations. Make-up, hair dye or fake tan. Tea or coffee. Blood from a scratched spot, a nosebleed or a small cut. A squashed mosquito or moth. Ink, rust from a metal frame, fluff balls from new bedding. If a mark sits on top of the fabric and lifts off, or matches something you did that day, it is probably not bed bugs.
Two beliefs that cause a lot of worry
“No bites means no bed bugs.” Not true. People react differently, and some never show marks at all. Two people can share a bed and only one gets itchy bites. So check the bed, not just your skin.
“Bed bug bites always come in a row of three.” Not reliable. Bed bug bites can be in lines or clusters, but so can other bites, and plenty of bed bug bites are scattered. Bites alone cannot name the insect. Our page on what is biting you at night explains why.
Check properly, once
- Do it in daylight with a torch. Strip the bed completely.
- Go along every mattress seam, the piping, the labels and the corners. Slide the edge of a bank card along the seams to push out anything hiding.
- Check the base and frame: joints, screw holes, the back of the headboard, the underside of a divan.
- Check the bedside table and the skirting next to the bed.
- Photograph anything you find with a coin beside it for scale. Lift a live bug or skin onto clear tape and stick it to white paper.
- Fit interceptors under each bed leg and check them once a week for a few weeks. They catch bed bugs climbing up to you.
A trap that caught nothing after a few days is not proof either way. Leave the interceptors in place for a few weeks before you decide.
No sprays just in case: treating a bed you are not sure about means sleeping on insecticide for nothing. Check first. If you do find bed bugs, use only products whose label covers beds and mattresses, or leave it to a professional.
When to stop searching, and when to get help
Checking every night keeps the worry going without telling you more. Give yourself one weekly check, and let the interceptors do the watching in between. If the worry is taking over, our page on bed bugs and anxiety may help.
Get a professional inspection if you find a live bug, eggs, shed skins, or spots that smear and keep appearing. Send them your dated photos and the tape sample. If you have just travelled or have guests staying, mention it. It helps them know where to look.
More questions
I found one tiny dark spot. Should I panic?
No. One spot is not enough to go on. Do the full check and fit interceptors.
Should I tell my guests?
If you have found real signs, it is fair to tell them and ask them to keep bags off beds. If not, there is nothing to tell yet.
Can I check with a photo?
A clear, close photo with something for scale helps a professional a lot. A blurry one rarely settles it.
Do bed bugs smell?
Large infestations can have a musty smell, but smell is not a reliable sign on its own.
