Pantry moths keep coming back. How do I stop them for good?
When pantry moths return after a clean-out, a hidden source is usually left. Find it, seal what remains, then use a pheromone trap to check whether males are still flying.
If you have cleared the cupboards and they are still coming, you have not done it wrong. Most likely you have missed one source. A single forgotten packet, a sack of bird seed or a cocoon in a shelf gap is enough to keep the cycle going. Find that, seal everything else, and track the moths with a trap until the catches stop.
There is no one product that keeps pantry moths away for good. What works is boring and reliable: no food they can reach, nowhere to hide, and a way to see that they have gone.
Where the last ones hide
- The back and top of the cupboard. A bag of lentils behind the cereal, a half-used packet of nuts on the top shelf, the baking drawer.
- Food that is not on your list as food. Pet food, bird seed, fish food, small animal food, dried flowers, potpourri, decorative dried corn or pasta.
- Other rooms. A snack stash in a bedroom or desk drawer, a bag of oats in the garage, a gift hamper, a cupboard in the utility room.
- Gaps in the cupboard itself. Shelf-peg holes, hinges, the joint where the back panel meets the shelf, under a shelf liner. Larvae crawl into these to spin cocoons.
- High up. The ceiling and the corners where walls meet it, the tops of curtains and picture frames near the kitchen. Larvae wander a long way from food before they pupate.
- Jars that are not really airtight. A screw lid without a seal, a clip jar with a tired rubber ring.
- New shopping. Eggs can arrive in food from the shop, so a clean kitchen can be restarted by a new bag of flour.

Seal what is left
- Move every dry food into hard, sealed containers: glass with a rubber seal, or rigid plastic with clip lids.
- Decant new shopping the day it comes in. If a bag did bring eggs, they stay shut in one jar where you will spot the webbing.
- Freeze high-risk items such as flour, nuts and bird seed for several days before storing, if you have the room.
- Vacuum the cupboards again a week or two after the first clean, including the ceiling corners, to catch anything that was still pupating.
Use a trap to know when you are done
A pheromone trap made for pantry moths uses a scent that draws male moths onto a sticky card. It does not catch females or touch larvae, so it will not end the problem. What it does is tell you the truth. Put one in the kitchen, write the date on it, and count the catch on the same day each week.
- Catches falling to none over several weeks: the source is gone.
- Catches steady or rising: something is still breeding. Go back through the list above.

Kids and pets: pheromone traps have no poison, but the glue sticks to fingers and fur. Fix them high up or inside a cupboard door. Do not spray insect killer on or near food unless the label says it is allowed there.
Bay leaves and lavender
A bay leaf in the flour and a lavender sachet on the shelf are two of the most shared tips. They smell nice, but neither kills eggs or larvae, and neither will stop moths that are already breeding in a forgotten packet. The same goes for lavender diffusers and for foggers, which settle on surfaces and miss the larvae inside food and cracks. Sealed containers do what the herbs are meant to.
When to get help
If you have cleared and sealed everything and the trap is still catching moths a month later, ask a pest controller who deals with stored food insects to take a look. Show them your dated trap counts and tell them what you have already done. In a flat, the source can sometimes be outside your home, so mention that too.
More questions
I saw one moth. Do I have an infestation?
Not necessarily. Check your dry foods for webbing and put up a pantry moth trap for a few weeks before doing anything drastic.
Will a trap pull moths in from outside?
It draws male pantry moths that are nearby. Keep it in the kitchen, not by an open window.
How long until they are gone?
It depends on how many hidden sources there were. Once the last one is out, catches usually tail off over a few weeks.
Are pantry moths harmful?
They spoil food and are a nuisance. Throw out anything with signs.
