When does the anxiety stop after bed bugs?

Anxiety after bed bugs is common and real. It usually eases once you have proof they are gone, and you can start building that proof now.

For most people it eases once they have proof the bed bugs are gone. Until then, checking the sheets at night, feeling a bite in every itch and struggling to focus at work are very common. Bed bugs come to you in your own bed, the one place that should feel safe, and it takes time to trust it again. None of that means something is wrong with you. It is how most people respond to a horrible few weeks.

There is nothing to be ashamed of

Bed bugs are not about cleanliness. They feed on blood, not dirt or crumbs, so a spotless home is no protection. They travel in luggage and bags, on second-hand furniture, and through shared walls in flats. Hotels, hostels, offices and trains all get them.

Clutter can make treatment harder, because there are more places to hide. It does not cause bed bugs. And you do not need to throw out clothes, books or toys to prove anything to anyone. Most belongings can be bagged and heat treated. Ask your pest controller before you bin anything.

How to tell people

Keep it short and factual, and lead with the plan. Something like: “We’ve found bed bugs. A company is treating it and we’re following their advice. I’ll tell you when it’s clear.” Most people take their cue from how you say it.

For a partner, include them. They can help with the laundry, and they need to know if they have stayed over. If you stay at theirs, take only clothes that have just come out of a hot dryer, carried in a sealed bag, and leave your usual bag at home.

You do not owe everyone the story. Tell the people who need to know: the people you live with, anyone whose home you have recently stayed in, guests due to visit, and your landlord if you rent.

If someone with bed bugs wants to visit

Feeling uneasy is not unreasonable, and you can be kind about it. Bed bugs mostly spread on things that sit still for a while: luggage, bags, coats, furniture. Meeting somewhere else until their treatment is finished is a fair ask. If they do visit, offer a hard chair, keep bags and coats off beds and sofas, and avoid overnight stays with luggage until they are clear.

Get proof they are gone

Nightly searching rarely brings relief. A routine does. The goal is a clear record that you can trust.

  1. Interceptors under each bed leg, with the bed a little away from the wall and the bedding off the floor. See bed bug interceptors.
  2. Check them on one set day each week, and write down what you find. Then stop checking in between. The log does the watching for you.
  3. Ask the company for a final check after the last treatment.
  4. Call it clear when the interceptors have stayed empty for several weeks after the last treatment and the bites have stopped.

If the log is not getting quieter, that is useful too. See still have bed bugs after treatment for what to ask next.

When to talk to a doctor

See a doctor if you cannot sleep, panic at bedtime, cannot stop checking, or feel low, and it carries on after the bugs are gone or gets in the way of work and home life. This is common after bed bugs and there is help for it. See a doctor or pharmacist too if you itch all the time with no new bites, or if any bites look infected.

It also helps to know where your next step is coming from. Our bed bug guide sets out the plan from first sighting to clear.

More questions

I feel itchy all the time, even with no new bites. Is that normal?

It is common after bed bugs. If your interceptors are empty, the itch is unlikely to be new bites. If it carries on, see a doctor or pharmacist.

Do I need to tell my workplace?

Only if you might carry them there, for example in a bag you bring every day. Keep that bag off the floor at home and out of the bedroom.

Do I have to throw out my things to be safe?

No. Most things can be washed and dried hot or bagged until treatment is done. Ask the company before you get rid of anything.

How long until I can stop checking?

Once the interceptors have stayed empty for several weeks after the last treatment and a final check finds nothing.
